Warehouse Insurance and Security Measures

All-risk warehouse insurance, fire suppression, 24/7 camera coverage and customs-seal control — how your goods are protected in the warehouse.

The goods left in a warehouse are usually worth more than the building itself. Insurance and physical security are therefore not a flourish on the service but its foundation. Below are both the measures we take and the questions you should ask before signing any contract.

Three things to check in the policy

  • Limit. Does the policy limit cover the highest value of goods that can be in the warehouse at one time? With high-tonnage steel that figure rises quickly.
  • Scope. Beyond fire, does it cover flooding, theft, damage during handling and earthquake?
  • Deductible. What is the excess per claim? On small but frequent losses a high deductible can make the policy useless.

Physical security and fire

A bonded warehouse is under customs supervision; entry and exit require permission and the area can be sealed. On top of that there is camera recording, lighting, perimeter security and a fire suppression system.

The regulation draws a clear line here: flammable and combustible goods may only be stored in public or private warehouses fitted with a dedicated fire protection and suppression system. If you have such cargo, do not proceed without seeing the documentation for that system.

Questions About This Page

What should I look at in warehouse insurance?

Three things: the limit, the scope and the deductible. The policy limit should cover the highest value of goods that can be in the warehouse at one time; the scope should include flooding, theft, handling damage and earthquake as well as fire; and the per-claim deductible should not render the policy useless for small but frequent losses.

How are my goods protected in the warehouse?

By customs supervision and by physical measures. A bonded warehouse is under the supervision of the customs administration, entries and exits require permission and the area can be sealed; on top of that there is camera recording, lighting, perimeter security and a fire suppression system.

Can I find out your policy limit?

You can; we share the policy together with its limit at the pre-contract meeting. If you tell us the value of your cargo, we will assess together whether the limit is sufficient for you.

What does the deductible mean and why does it matter?

The deductible is the amount the insured bears on each claim. A policy with a high deductible never comes into play for small but frequent losses; that is why the deductible should be asked about as much as the limit.

Can I take out my own insurance?

You can; as the owner of the goods you may arrange your own policy. In that case it is worth checking together before signing whether the scope of the two policies overlaps.

What is the purpose of the customs seal?

It guarantees that the area has not been opened without the administration's permission. In a bonded warehouse entries and exits require permission; the seal is the physical counterpart of that regime.

I want to store flammable material — what should I do?

First ask for the warehouse's certificate for its special fire and protection arrangement. The regulations require flammable and combustible materials to be stored only in warehouses where such an arrangement is in place; without the certificate, the insurance also becomes disputable in the event of damage.

How does the process work if damage occurs?

The situation is established in a written report, photographed, and the insurance process is started. Because the condition of the packaging is recorded on entry, when the damage occurred does not remain open to dispute.
