Hollow Section Sizes and Wall Thicknesses

Before you look at the size list, answer three questions: which load, which span, which environment?

Hollow sections are available from 20×20 to 300×300 mm square and from 20×40 to 400×200 mm rectangular; wall thickness varies between 1.00 and 12.00 mm.

To make the right choice within that wide range, three questions have to be answered: what load will the member carry, what span will it cross, and in what environment will it stand?

Outside dimension or wall thickness?

There are two ways of increasing load capacity: enlarging the outside dimension or thickening the wall. Enlarging the outside dimension is usually more efficient; as material moves away from the centroid, the second moment of area rises rapidly.

But if the outside dimension is fixed by architectural or assembly constraints, thickening the wall is the only option.

Calculating weight

The weight per metre of a hollow section is approximated by the cross-sectional area × 7.85 g/cm³ (the density of steel). Because of the corner radii the actual weight falls a little below the theoretical figure.

When ordering, be clear whether you work in metres or in tonnes; conversion errors between the two units are a common problem.

Galvanised for outdoors

For work that will stay outdoors — greenhouses, fencing, railings and solar mounting structures — galvanised hollow section is preferred.

The size range on the galvanised product is narrower (20×20 – 100×100 mm, wall 1.00–3.00 mm); if a larger section is needed, black section plus subsequent galvanising is considered.

Can a section not on the size list be found?

The range in the list shows all stock and supply options; not every size is in stock at every moment. Tell us the section and tonnage and we will tell you that day's position.

Are they sold by the metre or by the tonne?

Both are used in practice. State which unit you work in when asking for a quotation; conversion errors distort the cost.

Why is the size range narrower on galvanised sections?

The galvanised production line works with certain sections. For a larger section, black section plus subsequent galvanising is the alternative.

Should I increase the wall thickness or move up to a larger section?

Where span and bending are involved, moving up to a larger outer dimension is usually more effective than increasing the wall thickness at the same size; wall thickness in turn is decisive for welding, connections and durability outdoors. The decision belongs to the structural calculation that knows the load and the span; the size list does not replace it.

Why doesn't the weight I calculated match the weighbridge?

The weight from the formula is theoretical; the actual weight deviates somewhat because of wall thickness tolerance, corner radius and, on galvanised material, the coating. Use the theoretical weight for planning and freight calculation, and base the commercial settlement on the weighing of the shipment itself.

What happens to the coating when a galvanised section is cut or welded?

The zinc coating is destroyed at cut and weld points, and those spots are left unprotected. For fabrication that will work outdoors these areas have to be made good with a zinc-rich repair product; planning cuts and holes before assembly damages the least coating.
