Galvanised Coating Classes (Z100 – Z275)

The Z number is not a brand but the amount of zinc per square metre. Choosing the right class determines the life of the product.

The Z number shows the total amount of zinc on both faces of the sheet in grams per square metre: Z100 = 100 g/m², Z275 = 275 g/m². As the number rises the coating gets thicker and protection against corrosion lasts longer.

The choice follows how aggressive the environment will be; "the more the better" is wrong — "appropriate to the environment" is right.

How the coating protects

Zinc protects in two ways: as a physical barrier it cuts the steel off from the air, and through cathodic protection it sacrifices itself at exposed points such as scratches.

Thanks to that second property small scratches do not rust straight away; the zinc spreads from around the point and protects the exposed spot.

Estimating life

As coating thickness rises, life lengthens in proportion; but the environment is the decisive factor. Salt-laden damp at the coast, sulphurous air in an industrial zone and ammonia in agricultural buildings consume zinc quickly.

So the same Z class gives very different lives in two different regions. Make the choice knowing the environment.

A common mistake

Choosing a low coating class in a coastal region to reduce cost. The difference gained in the short term is repaid many times over in the cost of early replacement.

The second mistake is confusing coating with sheet thickness: thickness determines strength, the coating determines corrosion life.

Is Z275 always better?

In terms of protection yes, in terms of cost no. Indoors, Z275 creates unnecessary cost; the class appropriate to the environment is chosen.

Does the coating class affect forming?

A very thick coating can increase the tendency to crack on sharp bends. For deep drawing, grade and coating are chosen together.

How do I verify the coating class?

The coating class is stated on the quality certificate that comes with the product. Ask before ordering which certificate will come.

Are the edges left unprotected after cutting?

No, narrow cut edges stay protected for a while through the sacrificial action of zinc. Zinc is more reactive than steel, so it corrodes first and effectively covers the exposed edge. The effect is limited on wide bare areas, around drilled holes and at weld zones, so those spots need an additional protective coating.

Does the Z number refer to one face or to both faces combined?

The Z number states the zinc mass on both surfaces combined, so a single face carries roughly half of it. Make this explicit in your specification: calculating per face creates the expectation of a coating twice as thick as it really is. If in doubt, have the definition confirmed on the quality certificate before ordering.

How should galvanised sheet be stacked if it will sit in storage?

Store it in a dry, ventilated place where condensation does not form. When cold steel meets humid air, a white powdery oxide forms on the surface; that layer consumes zinc and spoils the appearance. Use spacers that let air move between the coils, and if the material waits outdoors cover it with something that can breathe.
