Galvanised sheet is produced by coating steel sheet with zinc using the continuous hot-dip method. The zinc layer slows corrosion by acting both as a physical barrier and as cathodic protection.
The coating class and the steel grade together determine both the life of the sheet and how well it can be formed.

What the DX grades mean
The number in the DX code shows how well the sheet can be formed. DX51D is general purpose; DX52D, DX53D and DX54D are produced for progressively deeper drawing work.
For simple bending and section making DX51D is usually sufficient; complex pressed parts require a higher grade.
The Z coating class
The Z number shows the total amount of zinc per square metre (both faces) in grams: Z100 = 100 g/m². As the number rises the coating gets thicker and the protection lasts longer.
For indoor applications Z100–Z140 may be enough, while Z200 and above is preferred outdoors and in coastal regions.
