What Is Galvanised Steel Sheet?

The most common way of protecting steel from corrosion. What do the grade and coating codes mean?

Galvanised sheet is produced by coating steel sheet with zinc using the continuous hot-dip method. The zinc layer slows corrosion by acting both as a physical barrier and as cathodic protection.

The coating class and the steel grade together determine both the life of the sheet and how well it can be formed.

What the DX grades mean

The number in the DX code shows how well the sheet can be formed. DX51D is general purpose; DX52D, DX53D and DX54D are produced for progressively deeper drawing work.

For simple bending and section making DX51D is usually sufficient; complex pressed parts require a higher grade.

The Z coating class

The Z number shows the total amount of zinc per square metre (both faces) in grams: Z100 = 100 g/m². As the number rises the coating gets thicker and the protection lasts longer.

For indoor applications Z100–Z140 may be enough, while Z200 and above is preferred outdoors and in coastal regions.

Does galvanised sheet rust?

When the zinc layer is used up, the steel beneath begins to corrode. How long that takes depends on the coating class and how aggressive the environment is.

Does a cut edge rust?

At an edge exposed after cutting, the zinc provides cathodic protection; on thin sections this protection is sufficient. On thick sections edge protection is recommended.

Can galvanised sheet be painted?

It can be painted with the right primer and surface preparation. For a factory-painted product, pre-painted sheet (PPGI) is preferred.

When ordering, do I need to state both the DX grade and the Z coating class?

Yes — the DX grade and the Z coating class describe two different things, so both belong on the order. The DX code covers how the sheet behaves when formed, the Z code the zinc coating class on the surface. If only one is stated, the supplier picks the other from whatever it normally stocks; adding size and edge condition makes quotes comparable.

How do I verify that the coating class is really the one I ordered?

You verify it from the mill quality document that travels with the material, which states both the grade and the coating class. Check that the code on the document matches the code on your order exactly, and raise it before accepting the delivery if it does not. Asking for the document to arrive with the shipment is the simplest safeguard.

How should galvanised sheet be stored and stacked?

It should be kept dry, ventilated and off the ground, because moisture trapped between stacked sheets causes the zinc oxidation known as white rust. White rust first spoils the appearance and, if left, consumes the coating. If the material has to wait outdoors, cover the stack so rainwater cannot collect and leave room for air to circulate.
