Moisture and Rust in Steel Coil Storage

In steel, loss usually happens not in the sale but during the wait. The most frequent culprit: moisture.

The most common cause of damage in steel coil storage is moisture. The white, powdery layer that forms on a galvanised surface (white rust) is produced when zinc reacts with moisture, and it reduces surface quality.

White rust usually causes no structural weakening; but because appearance and paint adhesion are affected, the product loses value.

How white rust forms

Moisture trapped between coils cannot ventilate and stays on the zinc surface for a long time. Under those conditions the zinc oxidises and a white, powdery layer forms.

Temperature change makes it worse: when a cold coil is brought into a warm, humid space, condensation forms on the surface.

Preventive measures

  • Storage in a covered, ventilated area
  • Breaking contact with the floor: using pallets or chocks
  • Keeping packaging intact; repairing torn packaging at once
  • Avoiding sudden temperature changes to prevent condensation
  • Regular surface checks on consignments held for a long time

Which products are more sensitive

Galvanised and pre-painted sheet are the most sensitive group, because the surface determines the value of the product. Unoiled cold-rolled sheet is also quickly affected by moisture.

On products such as hot-rolled black sheet and billet, light surface rust is usually not a problem; but corrosion that would reduce the cross-section must not be allowed.

If damage occurs

The situation is established in a written report and photographed. If the condition of the packaging was recorded on entry, when the damage occurred does not remain disputable.

That record is the principal document relied on in the insurance process.

Does white rust make the product unusable?

The oil film gives temporary protection, but not indefinitely. Consignments that will wait a long time still need a covered, dry environment.

Can steel coil be kept in the open yard?

Can a coil that arrives in cold weather be wrapped and stacked right away?

No; let the coil reach warehouse temperature before it is wrapped or tightly stacked. Cold metal meeting warmer, humid air produces condensation on the surface, and stretch film or a cover traps that moisture inside the wrap. Letting the consignment equalise in a dry area lowers the chance of white rust later.

Can steel coil and sections be placed directly on the floor inside a covered area?

They should not be; the load is raised off the floor on timber dunnage, stands or pallets. Concrete carries moisture, and washing water, a leak or rain blown in at the door reaches the bottom edge of the wrap first. Raising the load also keeps air moving underneath, so any dampness dries faster.

How do you document whether moisture damage happened during storage or before it?

Through the condition record made at intake: the surface is photographed as the consignment enters the warehouse and a note is added to the stock record. If something is found at release, the comparison is made against that first record. Where an insurance or compensation claim is possible, agree the required paperwork with your insurer and customs broker in advance.
