How Are Steel Products Stacked?

In steel, loss usually happens not in the sale but in the stack. What does correct stacking look like?

With steel products, stacking determines both occupational safety and product quality. Incorrect stacking produces two outcomes: accidents from toppling, and loss of value from surface damage.

Correct stacking has three rules: a suitable floor, limited height, and interlayers according to the type of product.

Floor and height

The floor must be level, sound and able to carry the load. Because point loads in steel are very high, a weak floor produces subsidence and toppling.

Stacking height is limited according to the type of product and the strength of the packaging. "As much as fits" is not a rule.

Using interlayers

Placing separators of timber or a suitable material between layers serves two purposes: it spreads the load and allows the forklift tines to enter.

On painted and galvanised surfaces, separators also prevent friction damage.

Breaking contact with the floor

Moisture in a concrete floor starts corrosion in steel that touches it directly. Contact must be broken with pallets or chocks.

In the open yard this rule is even more critical; nothing is stacked where water collects.

Is steel coil stacked upright or on its side?

Both are used; what decides is the packaging, the weight and the handling equipment. In either case chocks or wedges to prevent rolling are essential.

What is the limit on stacking height?

It is set by the type of product, the strength of the packaging and the capacity of the floor; there is no single general figure.

Which products are kept in the open yard?

Items not much affected by weather, such as pipe, sections and billet. Steel coil and painted products are taken into covered space.

Can different grades and lots be kept in the same stack?

No; each grade and each lot stays in its own stack with its own label. A mixed stack makes the material hard to tell apart both at stock count and at partial withdrawal, and raises the risk of shipping the wrong item. Where it cannot be avoided, a visible divider goes between the lots and the label stays on the outward face.

How should a stack be built if the goods will be withdrawn in parts?

The lot that leaves first goes to the most accessible place, on top or at the front face of the stack. If the dispatch order is not known in advance, the stack is split so that reaching one lot does not mean taking the others down. Restacking costs time and adds damage risk, so planning the layout up front is cheaper.

What goes between the stack and the floor?

Timber dunnage, chocks or a suitable rack goes underneath; the material is never set straight onto concrete. Lifting the stack off the floor lets air pass under it, which reduces moisture and condensation, and it leaves clearance for the forklift forks. In the open yard the bearers are laid so that water cannot collect under the stack.
