Trapezoidal Sheet Profiles: TR27, TR35, TR40

The profile number is not decoration; it shows the height of the trapezoid and its load-carrying capacity.

The difference between TR27, TR35 and TR40 is the height of the trapezoid: as the number rises, the profile gets taller, the second moment of area increases and the sheet can span further.

The right choice of profile depends on three variables: purlin spacing, the load coming onto it, and the sheet thickness.

Its relationship with thickness

Thickness ranges from 0.40 to 1.00 mm. On the same profile, greater thickness increases load capacity; but the effect of thickness is not as strong as that of profile height.

In other words, over a long span a thin TR40 usually performs better than a thick TR27.

Who makes the choice

The choice of profile and thickness belongs to the structural calculation for the project. Snow load, wind load and purlin spacing all enter the calculation.

Our job as supplier is to provide the profile and thickness determined by that calculation correctly; we do not substitute for the calculation.

Choosing the surface

Galvanised trapezoidal sheet is economical and durable; pre-painted (PPGI) trapezoidal sheet gives colour and additional corrosion protection.

In coastal regions and chemical environments a higher zinc coating class (Z200 and above) is preferred.

Is TR35 the most common profile?

It is the profile most often used on medium-span roofs. The final choice follows the structural calculation for the project.

Does the price rise as the profile gets taller?

At the same thickness it usually does, because more sheet is used per square metre. But total building cost can fall, since fewer purlins may be needed.

Which profile is used on façades?

Because the load on a façade is low, lower profiles are usually sufficient; appearance also becomes a deciding factor.

Can I choose a taller profile and go thinner on the sheet?

No — profile height and sheet thickness are not interchangeable. Height increases stiffness along the span, while thickness governs load capacity, walkability and resistance to impact. The two are settled together in the structural calculation; if you do not have one, have it confirmed by your structural engineer.

Which surface should I choose in a humid or coastal location?

The more corrosive the environment, the more the surface finish decides the outcome; in coastal and humid areas a painted finish over galvanising is preferred. Bare sheet wears down faster under those conditions. Tell us where the sheet will be used and what the conditions are, and we go through the suitable finishes with you.
